The Red Shoes
The Red Shoes
Matthew Bourne’s work is an example of synthetic theatre, a slightly insane mixture of acting, dance, plasticity exercises and lighting effects. Dramatic performances that use movement instead of words. A mixture of dramatic ballet, performance art, musical elements, references to mass culture and boundless fantasy. Definitions can’t embody the essence of these productions and are all insufficient. There is no point in retelling Bourne’s works, Bourne’s works need to be observed personally, pondered at, absorbed - and fallen in love with forever.
Our special project provides an opportunity not only to watch four brilliant Matthew Bourne productions, but also to observe how dance comes to life in the choreography of the master. On February 23, Etta Murfitt, Bourne’s permanent assistant, will hold a master class for Russian choreographers. The live transmission of the masterclass will be available to everyone.
The screenings are held as part of the UK-Russia Creative Bridge 2020-21 program, organized by the Culture and Education Department of the British Embassy in Moscow with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development.
