Opera singer, mezzo-soprano
An American mezzo-soprano. Born in Richmond, Virginia, she graduated with honors from Indiana University.
She is the recipient of numerous opera awards and grants, including the George London, Martin E. Segal, and Richard F. Gold awards. In 2010, Seattle Opera named her "Artist of the Year." She trained in the Metropolitan Opera's Young Artist Development Program and made her debut on that stage in 2005 in Manon. At the Metropolitan Opera, she has sung the roles of Siébel (Faust), Cherubino (The Marriage of Figaro), Stéphano (Roméo et Juliette), Nicklausse/The Muse (The Tales of Hoffmann), Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), Annio (La clemenza di Tito), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Nero (Agrippina), and others.
She has performed on the world's most prestigious opera stages: the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Bavarian State Opera, Vienna State Opera, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Teatro Real in Madrid, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Los Angeles Opera, Seattle Opera, Washington National Opera, and at the Salzburg, Glyndebourne, and Aix-en-Provence festivals.
Kate Lindsey is particularly renowned for her trouser roles: in addition to her Metropolitan Opera repertoire, these include Sesto (La clemenza di Tito), the Composer (Ariadne auf Naxos), Idamante (Idomeneo), Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier), Nero (L'incoronazione di Poppea), the Prince (Cendrillon by Massenet), and Ariodante in the eponymous opera. Her repertoire also includes: Angelina (La Cenerentola), Rosina (The Barber of Seville), Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Sister Helen Prejean (Dead Man Walking), Marguerite (La damnation de Faust), and Zerlina (Don Giovanni). In 2010, she created the title role at the world premiere of Daron Hagen's opera Amelia. In 2019, she performed the title role at the world premiere of Olga Neuwirth's opera Orlando at the Vienna State Opera.
